(AP) - On August 15, 1939, the world of cinema changed. "The Wizard of Oz" opened in theaters.

The movie was only 102 minutes long, but director Victor Fleming had an instant classic on his hands as the transition from black-and-white to color mesmerized the audience.

The summary was simple: "A girl dreams of a magical place beyond the rainbow, where she meets three companions and finally the Wizard himself." But everyone knows that the movie is far more than a yellow-bricked road, the Emerald City and Toto too.

Take a look through these photos above to remember the magic of "The Wizard of Oz."
