CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (NBC/NASA) - A commercial cargo ship launched from Cape Canaveral.

The Dragon capsule is headed to the International Space Station with 1,000 pounds of science experiments and gear -- and a treat for the astronauts on board. Ice cream awaits them.

It's the first supply run for California-based SpaceX, which has a $1.6 billion contract with the space agency to resupply the ISS.

NASA turned to private businesses after the shuttle fleet retired.

The spacecraft is on track to reach the space station by Wednesday.
