Sticking to a healthy game plan

BUFFALO, N.Y. (CW-23) - Blue Cross Blue Shield Courtney Moskal shares tips for keeping it healthy during the big game:

  • Get some exercise earlier in the day:  Even though you’re watching world-class athletes grinding it out on the field, you’re still sitting on the couch.  Exercise for about 35 minutes that morning, then get up and move after every quarter.
  • Don’t skip meals leading up to the event:  You will feel ravenous and most likely reach for more food than you would like later on.
  • B e thoughtful in your choices when snacking:  Make sure you’ll have at least a few healthy options in front of you while watching the game by bringing your own healthy dish to share.
  • Make your dip healthier:  Substitute regular cream cheese or sour cream for their fat-free counterparts, or try swapping it out for yogurt.  You can also bring hummus or low-fat veggie dip instead.  Load up your plate with veggies with a side of the delicious dip.
  • Liquid calories also count:  Alternative alcoholic or soft drinks with a glass of water or another non-caloric drink to stay hydrated and cut calories.
