BUFFALO, NY (CW23) - With the use of computer spell check its not shocking that many people can't spell, but that's not the case for one student at Casey Middle School. Eighth Grader Nabeel Rahman is picking up the often over-looked dictionary and beginning to prepare for the Scripp's National Spelling Bee.
"My parents signed me up for a spelling bee in first grade, says Rahman, "and I decided I did good so I kept just doing the regional and state bees."
Last year Rahman, hit the road and traveled to Washington, DC and came in ninth place in the National Spelling Bee.
Rahman says "It was really great cause I knew everyone in Buffalo would be watching and then when I made it to the semi-finals I knew everyone at school would be cheering for me. And when I made it to the finals me and my parents were really happy cause it was on live national television."
This year it's Mrs Sleap, Rahman's art teacher's, mission to help him prepare for the next National Spelling Bee.
I asked him if he had a spelling coach and he said no," recalls Sleap. "He just reads the things that they give him, so we decided to invent this word of the day... I ask Nabeel a word of the day, it is random, I get it from an internet sight. He attempts to spell it and I write it on the board so he can revisit it. "
The Scripps National Spelling Bee runs until Thursday the 31st, and all of WNY is wishing Rahman luck!
