Gossip Girl is an American television teen drama based on the popular novel series of the same name written by Cecily von Ziegesar. Gossip Girl revolves around the lives of socialite young adults growing up on New York City's Upper East Side who attend elite academic institutions while dealing with sex, drugs, jealousy, and other teenage issues.
Featuring an ensemble cast, the series begain its first season by introducing Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) and best friend Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester), as well as Blair's on-again-off-again boyfriend Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford). Other key cast members include: Nate's best friend Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick), Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley), who dated Serena during most of the first season, Jenny Humphrey (Taylor Momsen), who become involved in the lives of the main characters despite being less inclined to merge with the upper-east-side crowd and Vanessa Abrams (Jessica Szohr) who is Dan's best friend. The series is narrated by a seemingly omniscient character, "Gossip Girl" (voiced by Kristen Bell), who runs a blog about her fellow Upper East Siders - consequently stirring the pot and creating potential rivalries in this exclusive and vicious circle of friends.
When we last left the scandal-loving teens of the Upper East Side, romantic drama had taken over the streets of New York City. Lily (Serena's mother) married Bart (Chuck's father) after having a one night fling with Rufus (Dan's Father). Dan and Serena broke up thanks to the machinations of Miss Georgina Sparks, Nate and Vanessa broke off their whatever it was with little more than a shrug, and Chuck tried to decide between settling down with Blair or continuing life as an Upper East Side playboy.
The second season premiered September 1, 2008 on The CW, filled with all the sexy shenanigans the Upper East Siders have fallen into since summer began. Nate is making out with a married woman named Catherine, Chuck is spending quality time on the beach with three bikini-clad babes, and Dan is moving on with TWO women never seen before. Of course, things aren't as perfect as they seem. Chuck gets easily distracted when he discovers that Blair is coming to town, and Nate and Serena have been acting out a sham relationship so she can mope over Dan and he can sneak around with Mrs. Robinson.
Keeping track of the shifting friendships, jealousies and turmoil in this wealthy and complex world isn't easy, but it's what Gossip Girl does best.
Filmed in New York and based on the popular series of young-adult novels by Cecily von Ziegesar, "Gossip Girl" is from Alloy Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Paramount Television Inc. with executive producers Josh Schwartz ("The O.C.") & Stephanie Savage ("The O.C."), Bob Levy, Leslie Morgenstein ("Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants") and Felicia Henderson ("The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air"), and co-executive producer K.J. Steinberg ("The Nine").
